Dry, chapped lips
Defects in the mechanisms for storing moisture under the skin lead to moisture loss, resulting in dry lips which lack moisture.
Allergic reactions and irritation, whether from the use of cosmetics, from stress, from weather conditions or from sunlight.
Cold and dry weather leads to moisture loss, and the lips become less flexible as result.
Suggestions:
1. Drinking a lot of water will help add moisture to the body which will result in the moisturized lips without dryness or chaps.
2. Nourish and supplement the lips with moisturizer will help add more moisture to the lips.
3. Coat the lips with lip balm or gloss before going to bed every night to keep the lips healthy and protected from the wind that blew the lips all the time.
Wrinkled lips
Ageing skin: as the skin ages, the flexibility of skin’s fibers deteriorates alongside the skin’s regeneration system. This leads to a build up of dead skin resulting in wrinkled and discolored lips.
UVA radiation, which is dispersed in sunlight and which penetrates deep under the skin, causes changes in the structure of the skin. The result is premature ageing. To protect itself, the skin builds a thick outer layer a defense mechanism that can lead to thicker looking lips.
A lack of vitamins and minerals in the body can lead to changes in sub dermal mechanisms. Skin cells become dry, rough, and lacking in moisture, with the result that the skin becomes wrinkled easily.
Cleansing: removing makeup from the lip area without the use of a makeup remover can leave lipstick residues on the lips, which in turn can cause wrinkling.
Free radicals, which react to agents in the skin to cause premature ageing.
Suggestions:
1. For sensitive lips, fragrance-free lipstick is the best.
2. Keep your lips moisturized by applying lip gloss or balm that contain Vitamin E or Almond Oil before going to bed every night, especially those with dried air-conditioned bedroom.
3. Apply lip gloss or balm on your lips regularly to maintain the moisture balance and slow down the formation of wrinkles, the lips become soft and smooth, leaving no dryness or chaps.
Dark, discolored lips
Genetic factor: the amount of melanin produced by the inner layers of skin is dependent on the individual genetic make up of each person.
Sunlight which falls on the lips leads to the production of melanin as a defence mechanism to protect skin cells, resulting in the gradual discoloration of the lips.
Free radicals: which react to agents in the skin, causing premature ageing.
Tobacco smoke: prolonged cigarette smoking leads to sticky yellow nicotine deposits on the lips, teeth and nails, and this discoloration becomes steadily worse.
Suggestions:
1. Sunlight can draw moisture from lips which result to the darkening of the lips, as such, it is recommended to use lipstick that contain sun screen.
2. Licking the lips too often makes it more dried and chapped because the lips will directly react to the enzymes in your saliva.
