Moles are small dark brown areas of skin which appear on the cheeks, forehead, lips, chin and both eyebrows. Caused by defects in melamine production, moles appear when melanin is spread unevenly throughout the skin, with clusters of melanin coming together to form darker patches. These little spots are known as moles, and becoming increasingly dark unless sufficient preventative measures are taken. Moles come in two types, deep ones which lie in the dermis, and shallow ones which lie in the epidermis, the latter being lighter than the former. Moles are also related to female hormones, and the chances of males having moles are only 10%.
Freckles are small dark brown dots which are dispersed across the face, and are caused by clusters of melanin stimulated by sunlight. They differ from moles in that they are only found in the epidermis, and can be inherited genetically. They are more commonly found in people with white skin than people with darker skin.
Factors which exacerbate facial moles, freckles, blemishes and discoloration
• Sunlight, UV radiation and heat are major factors which stimulate the generation of more melanin. This is particularly the case from 10.00-16.00 hrs, when UV waves are 400-700 mm long. The result is dark skin and increasingly dark moles and freckles.
• Changes in estrogen levels caused by pregnancy or while using contraception are important determinants of freckles.
• Deficiencies of certain vitamins and minerals, including Vitamin A, B2, C, D or E, which may be caused by weight loss or reduction, or failure to receive sufficient nutrients.
